Race Report - Production Sports Cars 18 /19 June 2005, Oran Park GP Circuit
Perfect weather greeted entrants of the NSW
Production Sports Car Championship at Oran
Park. Once again our category was almost
last of the blocks so there was ample time
to get ready for qualifying. Unfortunately,
no matter how much time you have life dishes
up little surprises. During lap two of the
session, the Sysfig Racing 911S began
violently overcorrecting after each turn. It
very quickly worsened, almost bringing me
into the tyre wall under the bridge at the
exit of turn two, then at the next corner
sending me into the kitty litter. I soon
realised that I had a flat left rear tyre,
forcing me to coast into the pits. That was qualifying.
New Dunlop race rubber was fitted to the
left rear wheel prior to race 1 on the
Saturday afternoon however as few clear lap
runs were conducted during qualifying, my
starting position was right at the back of
the grid. After launching start where a
number of places were gained, I
miscalculated the braking zone on the second
lap through turn 1 at about 170km/h and
decided it would be better to keep straight
dusting off speed and head through the
gravel trap rather than force a turn at too
high speed. I thought I may be able to creep
out although the 911S was bogged in no time
forcing out the safety car. With the race
only 6 laps, by the time I was hauled out by
the tow vehicle I was unable to catch up to
the back of the field the race was over. It's back of the grid again for the next
race.
A solid start once again Sunday morning race
2 making a few positions ducking deep on the
inside into turn 1 and holding position. Lap
2 and into turn 2 Stannard (Porsche 993 RS)
dived in on the inside of Bolinowsky
(Porsche GT3) resulting in the both spinning
and joined in a car park situation by
Anderson (MX5) and most other C class
competitors. I was able to bypass the chaos
on the inside making up around 4 positions.
The A class cars of Pye (GT3 Cup) and Adams
(Robnell Cobra) passed me during the course of the
race after a black flag penalty, while I
continued fighting to stay ahead of the angry mob
behind me. On the last corner onto the
straight of the last lap, I was needlessly turned around by an prior incident fast recovering RX7, with the rest of the field passing me by. Back of the grid again and no penalty issued by the stewards for the incident.
Trophy race and second last from the back of
26 starters, the 911 launched again (I love
the carbon Kevlar clutch) getting me in
front of most C and D class cars by the
first few corners of the GP circuit. After a
fierce race with a few scars received on the
back end of the 911S, I managed to hold my
position with a gaggle of MX5’s and Lotus?
behind me and ended in 15th position overall. A good recovery, although
disappointed at not being able to get
further up the class B field. At the end of
the weekend I had both rear Simmons rims
damaged, very few class B points although
the action between all classes ensured it
was worth the effort. |

The Sysfig Porsche 911S supported by Car Quote came an unexpected 2nd in Class B during the Production Sportscars 1 Hour Endurance Race on the 7th November. The day didn't start off to well with having to qualify on old tyres and limited time to make adjustments to the suspension ending in grid position 27 from 35 starters. New Dunlop race slicks were mounted (must be nirvana for rev heads - there is nothing better) for the 5 lap warm up sprint race. The car had transformed and a few places were gained. The main event in the afternoon was next and after a full 1 hour frenzy, we finished in position 20 from 31 which somehow was good enough for 2nd in the class mainly due to the number of Class A entries. Up on the podium although no champagne. Bummer.
A big thanks to Bob Whyms Automotive for the suspension and gearbox work and Pacific Reproductions for the oil cooler fabrication work to make to car run cool on a hot Spring day.

Sysfig Racing, in a modified Porsche 911, managed to finally make it to an event - the last official 2004 NSW State Racing Championship round of the Production Sport Cars series at Eastern Creek Raceway on 25/26 September. Due to chronic understeer issues and old race tyres, we had mixed results across the three races. Qualifying was only ok at best, managing only position 20 from 25 entries, although keeping the hordes at bay was another task all together. It was, however, a great weekend with plenty of close racing and a great variety of cars. Further development of the suspension remains in the pipeline and will make a huge difference.

Sysfig is actively competing in the NSW Production Sports Car Championship. 2003 brought a substantial increase in focus on the category due to series sponsorship from Tattersalls lottery agents providing TV exposure on FoxSports and SBS Speedweek programs. In addition to crowd and competitor attendance over weekends, Sysfig aims to capitalise on this exposure for current and existing sponsor brand awareness as well as just having fun racing.

Sysfig returned to racing during 27/28th September, although we cannot report any good news. After having a great start for race 1 and gaining around 3 places, the 911's transmission decided to give up
with a loud 'crunch' after only 1 completed lap. Not happy.
Anyway, that's racing and pretty much it for season 2003.
